Narrow Palate Treatment in Blacktown

Call (02) 9671 7201

A narrow palate can affect how a child’s teeth come through, how their bite develops and, in some cases, how comfortably they breathe and sleep.

At Elevate Dental Group, we assess palate development in children and recommend treatment based on their age, growth and individual needs. Early treatment can help create more space for developing teeth, support a healthier bite and guide jaw growth while it is still changing.

Understanding a Narrow Palate

The palate forms the roof of the mouth and the floor of the nasal cavity. When it develops too narrowly, there may be less room for the upper teeth to align and, in some children, less space through the nasal airway.

Narrow vs Normal Palate

A well-developed palate is broad and gently rounded, like a wide U. This gives the adult teeth enough room to come through in a smooth arch. A narrow upper jaw is more of a tight V, so teeth tend to overlap, twist or get pushed out of line.

High-Arched Palate Explained

A high-arched palate sits deeper and higher than usual. It often goes hand in hand with narrowness, as the palate grows upwards more than outwards.

Elevate Dental Group can assess your child’s palate, bite and jaw development, explain what we find clearly and discuss suitable treatment options with you if intervention is recommended.

Spotting the Signs of a Narrow Palate in Children

Your child doesn’t need every sign below for an assessment to be worthwhile.

In the Mouth

  • Crowded teeth, or adult teeth coming through out of line
  • Teeth that are "blocked out" with no room to erupt
  • A crossbite, where some upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
  • A high palate with a deep, V-shaped roof

At Home and During Sleep

  • Breathing through the mouth during the day or at night
  • Snoring or restless sleep
  • Grinding teeth at night
  • Waking up tired or with a dry mouth

If grinding or snoring is part of the picture, our page on teeth grinding & snoring explains what we look for and how we can help.

Common Causes of a Narrow Upper Jaw

The tongue naturally rests against the palate and helps shape it as a child grows, so anything that changes this can affect development. Common causes include:

Genetics, as jaw shape and a narrow jaw often run in families

Mouth breathing linked to allergies, a blocked nose or large tonsils and adenoids

Thumb-sucking or dummy use that continues past the toddler years

Low tongue posture, where the tongue rests on the floor of the mouth

Tongue-tie, which can limit how high the tongue rests

When mouth breathing seems linked to allergies or enlarged tonsils, we’ll suggest a visit to your GP. They may refer you to an ENT if needed.

Crossbite Treatment for a Narrow Palate

A crossbite happens when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when your child bites down. It can affect the back teeth on one or both sides, or the front teeth. Because a narrow upper jaw is often too small to fit around the lower jaw, the two problems commonly appear together.

Some children also shift their lower jaw to one side to bite comfortably, which can affect how the jaw grows. That’s why crossbite treatment in children usually focuses on widening the upper jaw, not just moving teeth.

How Palate Expansion Gently Widens the Upper Jaw

Palate expansion works with your child’s natural growth. In young children, the two halves of the upper jaw are joined by a seam that hasn’t fully fused yet. A custom appliance applies gentle, steady pressure to widen this seam, and new bone forms in the gap.

1

Assessment and scan

We examine your child’s teeth, jaw and bite, take X-rays if needed and capture a digital scan.

2

Fitting the expander

A custom appliance is fitted to the upper back teeth. We’ll show you how it works and answer your questions.

3

Turning at home

You’ll turn the appliance with a small key on a schedule we set, gradually widening the palate.

4

Aligning and retaining

Once there’s enough room, partial braces or aligners can help guide the teeth into place, followed by a retainer.

Widening the palate may help some children breathe more easily through the nose. It isn’t a treatment for sleep apnoea, behaviour or concentration on its own. If you’re concerned about pauses in breathing during sleep, our sleep apnoea page explains how our dentists can help and when we may have to refer to a GP.

7–9

years — the ideal age for an assessment

Early Assessment While Your Child Is Still Growing

The ideal time for an assessment is around age 7 to 9. By then, enough adult teeth are through to see how the jaw is developing, and the palate is still growing. This makes palate expansion simpler and more predictable than it is later in life.

Not every child with a narrow palate needs treatment straight away. Sometimes we simply monitor growth and check again at future visits.

Narrow Palate Options for Teens and Adults

Once growth finishes, the seam in the upper jaw fuses, so widening the palate is more limited. For some teens and adults, braces or aligners can create a little extra room by adjusting the position of the teeth. More significant cases may need a referral for surgically assisted expansion. We’ll talk you through every option.

Clear Costs and Interest-Free Payment Plans

The cost depends on your child’s age, how much widening is needed and what follow-up treatment is involved. We’ll give you an itemised quote after the assessment. You can find more detail on costs on our kids braces page, and interest-free payment plans are available.

If your child is eligible for free kids dental (CDBS), it may cover check-ups and X-rays. Orthodontic treatment, including palate expansion, isn’t covered by the scheme. Some private health funds with extras cover may contribute.

FAQs

It can be. A narrow jaw often runs in families, but habits such as mouth breathing and thumb-sucking also play a part. Many children have a mix of both.

It can. Because the palate forms the floor of the nose, a narrow one may leave less room for airflow, which can contribute to mouth breathing and snoring. As these concerns often have several causes, we may also suggest a GP visit.

Most children feel some pressure for the first few days after each stage, and it usually settles quickly. Some notice a small gap between their front teeth as the palate widens, which is expected.

Some children do. Expansion creates room, but the adult teeth may still need guiding into place. Any later treatment is often simpler because the space has already been made.

A crossbite rarely corrects on its own once adult teeth are coming through. Early crossbite treatment can help the jaw grow in a more balanced way.
