Root Canal Therapy Blacktown

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy (or endodontic therapy) is a dental treatment which repairs the damage inside of a tooth. This allows the removal of any ongoing pain and lets you keep the tooth instead of extracting it.

Root canal therapy is usually required if you have a toothache, swelling or a severely broken down tooth. Tooth decay is usually the major cause, as it begins when the bacteria from the decay starts eating away at the tooth (enamel). You can often tell that it is happening when you have sensitivity pain to hot and cold drinks or that it hurts to chew. This is because the outer layer of the tooth is weakened and when it gets too deep, the bacteria infiltrates the nerve (including blood vessels) causing more pain. At this stage, root canal is usually necessary.

Our qualified and experienced dentists will always make every effort to make your visit as pleasant as possible. Our services include Root Canal Blacktown Therapy, dental exams, teeth whitening, and dental implants and more. Warning Signs You May Need A Root Canal

  • Hot & Cold Sensitivity (sharp shooting pain when eating ice cream or hot tea)
  • Lingering Pain (pain when putting pressure on the tooth, and if the pain still lingers after pressure is relieved)
  • Swelling (if the gum or one side of the jaw is swollen)
  • Broken Tooth (if the tooth is severely broken and fractured)
  • Tooth Darkens (if the tooth starts to turn grey or black)

What To Expect During the Procedure

This procedure may need to be completed over several visits.

  1. The nerve of the infected tooth is removed under strong anaesthesia, which helps relieve the nerve pain often felt by the patient.
  2. The diseased pulp and bacteria are flushed out with disinfectant and medications and the root canals are cleaned with root canal instruments.
  3. The pulp chamber and root canals are then filled and sealed with antibacterial medications
  4. The tooth opening is restored with a filling.
  5. After a root canal treatment, a tooth becomes brittle (similar. to tree that has died – where the tree trunk is very crispy and weak). It can be strengthened (to stop it from splitting while eating) with a ceramic cap or ‘crown’.

Like any medical procedure, a root canal treatment poses some risk and, on rare occasions, there may be complications. These complications may result in a tooth needing additional treatment, referral to a specialist or may result in the tooth needing to be removed.

FAQs

During the procedure, our dentists will ensure that you are completely numb (we have strong anaesthesia) to ensure you will not feel anything during the procedure.

Yes, if left for too long, the infection can spread to other teeth, resulting in the need of more than one root canal treatment.

Yes you can as soon as the numbing wears off (2-3 hours).

Antibiotics often does not improve the pain (minimal improvement) and it is a temporary relief as the inside of the tooth is the source of the infection.

After a root canal is completed, you will need a filling or more ideally a ceramic restoration (crown or cap) to restore the damaged structure of the tooth.
